This is Louisa Wei’s documentary film about Esther Eng, the most prominent woman director in Hong Kong in the 1930’s and the first woman Chinese-language film director in the US. A San Francisco native and open lesbian, Esther Eng's contribution to film history was sadly overlooked – her 11 feature films mostly lost.
With a captivating archive of newly discovered images and interviews with those who knew her, Louisa Wei uncovers a rich chapter of film history that challenges both gender and racial hierarchies in Hollywood and Hong Kong.
(2014 | 90 minutes | Documentary | Directed by Louisa Wei)
